Croydon is a large town in south London. It is 9.4 miles south of Charing Cross and the principal settlement in the London Borough of Croydon. Based on the UK 2011 Census, the entire town had a population of 192,064 whilst the borough had a population of 384,837. Based on history, the town lies on the line of the Roman road from London to Portslade. In the mid 19th century, Croydon was a leisure destination. The development of Brighton in the 1780s made Croydon a stop for stagecoaches on the road to the south of London.

The town became the terminus of two pioneering commercial transport links with London at the beginning of the 19th century. The first which opened in 1803 was the horse-drawn Surrey Iron Railway from Wandsworth as the Croydon, Merstham and Godstone Railway. The second which opened in 1809 was the Croydon Canal, which branched off the Grand Surrey Canal at Deptford. The London and Croydon Railway was an atmospheric and steam-powered railway opened between London Bridge and West Croydon in 1839, using much of the route of the canal. Croydon was also the first area outside central London to use postcodes.

The arrival of the railways and other communications advances in the 19th century led to an increase in Croydon’s population between 1801 and 1901. This rapid expansion of the town led to health problems, especially in the damp and overcrowded working-class district of Old Town. In response to this, Croydon became one of the first towns in the country to acquire a Local Board of Health in 1849. The Board constructed public health infrastructure which included a reservoir, water supply network, sewers, a pumping station and sewage disposal works.

Croydon is also the birthplace of London Croydon Airport, UK’s first international airport. Celebrities that travelled through included Charlie Chaplin, John F. Kennedy and Rita Hayworth. Meanwhile, Winston Churchill took flying lessons there. Amy Johnson took off from Croydon in May 1930 and became the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. The airport which is now Grade II listed has the world’s oldest air traffic control tower.

These good transport links have been a major factor contributing to the growth of Croydon. It has led to the town becoming a major centre for distribution. Retail is another major service and employer in the town centre, with a retail economy which has experienced a boom resulting in several new shops. North End is Croydon’s main shopping street.

Croydon is also one of the largest financial centres in the southeast outside London and is also home to many legal and insurance firms. It is a major office area in the southeast of England, being the largest outside of Central London. In 2007, Croydon had a 14% rise in new firms trading in the borough after 125 new companies started up, increasing the number from 900 to 1,025. It won the Enterprising Britain Award and “the most enterprising borough in London” award, to jump from 31 to 14 in the table.
